Mhh! JAMANI HAPA HATUJALANULIWA KWELI??

Tanzanian ruby valued at £11m sells for just £8,000 after being proved to be a lump of rock

A giant ruby once valued at £11million has sold for just a fraction of the price after documents proved it was a forgery, it emerged today.

The 10,700 carat Gem of Tanzania, once believed to be the largest ruby in the world, was sold for just £8,010 by administrators Ernst & Young.

The rock once underpinned the balance sheet of Shropshire firm Wrekin Construction and was listed as an £11million asset by the company's owner David Unwin.

But after the company collapsed last spring the estimated value of the 4.4lb purple rock dropped to as little as £100.

Some value could be recouped if the gem is broken up to release smaller rubies inside, but in its current form it is simply a lump of anyolite, a practically worthless grade of ruby.

The gem was sold off by administrators last week in an attempt to recoup some of Wrekin's £40million debts to their 1,000 creditors.

It was bought by Network Group Holdings whose Network Construction Services in Telford are owed several hundred thousand pounds by Wrekin.

Wrekin Construction was 'saved' by the stone in 2007 after Derbyshire entrepreneur David Unwin offered the gem in return for preference shares.

He produced a certificate of valuation assumed to be genuine and the gem was listed as an asset - transforming the fortunes of the company.

Its RICHMOND, Richmond,richmond, richm........

IT’S official: Former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa and National Assembly Speaker Samuel Sitta have been heading two warring factions of MPs that were threatening to tear the ruling party apart.
A member of the three-man team formed last year by the CCM National Executive Council (NEC) to investigate the rift among the ruling party legislators, Mr Pius Msekwa, told reporters here yesterday that Mr Lowassa and the Speaker would formally be summoned before the special committee headed by former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi next month and be asked to cease fire.
Mr Msekwa, who is also the CCM Vice-Chairman (Mainland), said their team, whose mandate has been extended for a month, would submit the final report to NEC in April or May. He explained that the conflict revolved around the report by a parliamentary select committee on the award of emergency power generation contract to Richmond.
The report by the committee headed by Kyela CCM legislator Harrison Mwakyembe insinuated that Mr Lowassa had influenced the appointment of Richmond, causing heated debate in the House, which led to the former PM’s resignation, along with Energy and Minerals and Industry, Trade and Marketing ministers Dr Ibrahim Msabaha and Nazir Karamagi, respectively.
The Monduli CCM legislator made no secret his bitterness and accused Dr Mwakyembe’s team of malice, citing how the committee Chairman presented the report to the House with relish. Mr Lowassa complained that the parliamentary probe sanctioned by the Speaker was calculated to tarnish his reputation and force him out of office.
Mr Msekwa explained that the ensuing enmity between Mr Lowassa and Speaker Sitta split the CCM backbenchers between them and the conflict was extended to the constituencies, where the two factions waged a money-fuelled power struggle hinging on the next general election. “Each group accused the other of using money to corrupt voters in their constituencies and this heightened the conflict,” he said.

Flaviana Matata aendelea kutesa majuu

It has been a while now that my life had taken on a sense of expectation. It has been almost 3 months since I met Russell Simmons at a charity event In New York. It was Life Project for Africa – a fund raising event for the construction of a children's hospital in Tanzania. It was during this meeting that Uncle Rush commented that I should be modeling in New York and promised to help me. I have been dreaming of this for a long time and hearing the promise from Uncle Rush, sent my heart racing as I saw my dream coming true.

Wazungu wakubali kutulangua RADAR!

Tony Blair was at the centre of controversy over BAE's arms deal withTanzania, just as he was in the Saudi contracts.

Cabinet ministers Claire Short and Robin Cook had tried to stop the sale of the hugely expensive radar to the poverty- stricken Tanzanians. But, as prime minister, he overruled them and insisted that the deal had to go through.

It left Cook ruefully muttering that it seemed that Dick Evans, BAE's then chairman, seemed to have "the key to the garden door of No 10".

The World Bank and the International Civil Aviation Organisation judged that the 2001 purchase was unnecessary and overpriced.

But the £28m deal started to look even worse when the SFO discovered that a third of the contract's price had been diverted into secret offshore bank accounts.

The SFO believed that this money was used to pay bribes to Tanzanian politicians and officials.

Yesterday Short, who resigned from the government, said : "Every way you looked at it, it [the deal] was outrageous and disgraceful. And guess who absolutely insisted on it going through? My dear friend Tony Blair, who absolutely, adamantly, favoured all proposals for arms deals.

"It was an obviously corrupt project. Tanzania didn't need a new military air traffic control, it was out-of-date technology, they didn't have any military aircraft – they needed a civilian air traffic control system and there was a modern, much cheaper one. Everyone talks about good governance in Africa as though it is an African problem, and often the roots of the 'badness' is companies in Europe."

In Yesterday's agreement with the SFO, BAE admitted one offence under the 1985 Companies Act relating to the Tanzanian contract.

Dick Olver, the chairman, admitted that BAE "made commission payments to a marketing adviser and failed to accurately record such payments in its accounting records ... The company failed to scrutinise these records adequately to ensure that they were reasonably accurate and permitted them to remain uncorrected."

The SFO discovered that the money had gone into a Swiss bank account controlled by Sailesh Vithlani, a middleman of Indian extraction with a British passport.

He left Tanzania after the country's anti-corruption unit accused of lying to investigators. He is listed as wanted by Interpol.

One Tanzanian politician, Andrew Chenge, was forced to resign in 2008 after investigators discovered more than £500,000 in a Jersey bank account he controlled. He denied the money had come from BAE.
