Battle to control Jackson's fortune begins

His mother took the first step Monday when she petitioned the Superior Court of California to be named the administrator of the late singer's estate. Katherine Jackson said in the filing she was acting to ensure Michael Jackson's three children are the beneficiaries.

It's the opening salvo in a complicated battle for a fortune that includes a lucrative music catalog of the King of Pop's own hits, the rights to songs by the Beatles, and the Neverland ranch that could one day be a tourist attraction.

There's even an elaborate video production, dubbed the "Dome Project," that was overseen by Jackson and finished two weeks before he died.

The high stakes and array of people involved will likely make the fight far more convoluted than recent high-profile squabbles over the estates of singer James Brown and ex-Playboy playmate Anna Nicole Smith.

"There's no doubt that there's going to be a big battle," said Alexis Martin Neely, a Los Angeles-based estate attorney. "It's going to be very messy and I don't see anything comparing to this."

Complicating matters is that few, if any, people know all the details of the reclusive entertainer's financial affairs. His mother's filing, for example, declares that Jackson died "intestate," or without a will. But that is in dispute. Another person with knowledge of Jackson's business matters told The Associated Press last Friday that there is a will, which would take precedent in court. That person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the material.

Becoming an estate administrator "puts a vast amount of power in one person's hands," said Roy Kozupsky, a lawyer with Smith, Gambrell & Russell. The person would have the power to sell assets, make deals and determine how to pay off creditors, he said.

At stake is Jackson's 50 percent ownership in Sony/ATV Music Publishing, a company itself estimated to be worth $2 billion; Jackson's own recordings and songwriting rights, which could be worth more than $150 million; and his joint ownership of the Neverland ranch.

Katherine Jackson said in her filing she intends to use the estate's assets for "the exclusive use of the decedent's (Jackson's) three children." But the filing could also be the first move in contesting the validity of a will, if there is one, Kozupsky said.

Jackson, who died Thursday at age 50, left behind three children: son Michael Joseph Jr., known as Prince Michael, 12; daughter Paris Michael Katherine, 11; and son Prince Michael II, 7. The youngest was born to a surrogate mother, while the first two were born to ex-wife Deborah Rowe.

NEW YORK – Convicted swindler Bernard Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison Monday for fraud so extensive that the judge said he needed to send a symbolic message to those who might imitate his fraud and to victims who need relief.

"Here the message must be sent that Mr. Madoff's crimes were extraordinarily evil and that this kind of manipulation of the system is not just a bloodless crime that takes place on paper, but one instead that takes a staggering toll," Chin said.

The judge said the estimate that Madoff has cost his victims more than $13 billion was conservative because it did not include money from feeder funds.

"Objectively speaking, the fraud here was staggering," he said.

Kenya's health officials have stepped-up surveillance at airports and other points of entry following the confirmation of the first H1N1 flu case in the country.

On Monday, Public Health and Sanitation minister Beth Mugo said tests carried out on samples of a 20-year-old British student at the Kenya Medical Research Institute and National Influenza Centre had tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1) popularly known as swine flu.

The student, who was in group of 34 British students, arrived in Kenya via Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on June 21. On arrival, the student and his colleagues, later travelled by bus to Kisumu where they are undertaking field studies.

“Two days later on arrival in Kisumu, the medical student developed a headache and joint pains where his samples were taken at a local facility before they were flown to Nairobi for testing on Sunday,” Mrs Mugo said.

Continental Airlines pilot dies during flight; plane able to land safely

A Continental Airlines captain died during a transatlantic flight Thursday, prompting the copilot and a second pilot aboard the jet to take over the controls, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown.

Flight 61 from Brussels to Newark landed safely in New Jersey at 11:49 a.m.

Continental Airlines said the pilot, who died in midflight of natural causes, was a 60-year-old man with 32 years of service to the airline.

Few details of the incident were available, but Brown said that air traffic controllers had no reports that the plane was in danger.

Police detectives and residents of Gulu District were on Friday treated to drama when the district state attorney attempted in vain to chew and swallow money he had allegedly received as a bribe.

Mr Emmanuel Muwonge was arrested in his office minutes after he allegedly received Shs150,000 as a bribe from the family of a man identified as Dr Ojok, who is facing charges of assault. Mr Muwonge had allegedly promised to ‘kill’ the case.

His plan to destroy the evidence backfired because he failed to chew the first set of Shs10,000 notes he had put in his mouth.

A Police source who asked for anonymity because he is not allowed to speak to the press, said Mr Muwonge’s arrest came after the people he took a bribe from first recorded the serial numbers of the money with the Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations, Mr Sylvano Kibwota, before handing over the cash.

Northern Uganda Regional CID officer Vincent Ouma said Mr Muwonge received the bribe in collusion with a Police officer attached to court only identified as Sgt. Omwa. He said the Police was still investigating the matter.

JOHANNESBURG, June 11, Hundreds of investors have lost money in what could be South Africa's biggest corporate fraud, worth up to 10 billion rand ($1.24 billion), a private investigator and lawyer said on Thursday.

The fraud was spearheaded by Barry Tannenbaum, the South African son of one of the founders of pharmaceuticals firm Adcock Ingram, and is still unravelling, they said.

Investigator Specialised Services Group (SSG), hired by investors to look into Tannenbaum, said he persuaded investors to plough money into a pharmaceutical ingredient import business and faked purchase orders from firms including Africa's biggest generic drug maker, Aspen.

Products included ingredients for life-prolonging anti-retroviral AIDS drugs, and Tannenbaum offered annual returns of up to 200 percent, said SSG, which published documents and emails related to the scheme on its website.
